Propositional Revelation, the Only Revelation – D.B. Knox : Anglican Church League, Sydney, Australia

Similarly, the knowledge of God’s providence comes to us through propositions. For example, our Lord’s statement that God is “Lord of heaven and earth” (Matt. 11:25) is a proposition. Yet by this title a profoundly important truth has been revealed to us. God’s providence is not deducible by observation of events; though having been given to us through propositional revelation we can see this doctrine reflected in events.  -- D. Broughton Knox

[Charlie's note:  I am posting this in response to the recent publication of Mike Horton's new systematic theology, The Christian Faith.  According to Horton and other Van Tilians, Scripture is not the very words of God univocally revealed in propositional truth claims.  Rather Scripture is only analogically God's Word due to the Creator/creature distinction and at no single point does our knowledge coincide with God's knowledge, EVEN WHEN IT IS SPECIALLY REVEALED IN HOLY SCRIPTURE.  This is not the classical Reformed view of special revelation in Scripture.  It is a philosophical irrationalism read back into the position taken by the Reformers.  In fact, the theory of analogy is borrowed from the rationalism of Thomas Aquinas.  Although D.B. Knox gets the atonement wrong (Amyraldianism), he did have a firm understanding of the doctrine of Scripture.  Click on the post title to see the original post at the Anglican Church League.]

I do not necessary endorse Knox's view of "experience". What this ineffable and emotional experience is no one can say. Feelings and experience are not the basis for our conversion. It is rather understanding and knowing the propositions of the Bible and believing/assenting that they are true.
