1662 Book of Common Prayer: Daily Prayer

by Charlie J. Ray

For those who are yet unaware, I have started another blog dedicated to a daily morning and evening devotional based on the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.  The reason I have undertaken this task is that I myself have benefited greatly from reading the services in the Reformed prayer book.  As the saying goes, we become what we pray.  The genius of Archbishop Cranmer and the English Reformers was in changing the Roman liturgy from Latin into English, including lengthy readings from the English translation of the Bible.  Not only that but Cranmer instilled an Evangelical and Reformed or Calvinist understanding of justification by faith alone, repentance, and assurance based on the doctrine of unconditional election and predestination.  Predestination applies to both election and reprobation, however, as some modern neo-Kuyperians in the Presbyterian Church in America and other broad Evangelical "Reformed" denominations attempt to deny.  (Article 17).

I have also rejected the 1871 Lectionary in favor of the original 1662 Lectionary, which reads entire chapters of both the Old Testament and the New Testament.  When reading through the prayer book daily and persisting in this morning and evening for an entire year something special begins to happen in the mind or heart of the believer.  God's Word does not return to Him void but accomplishes what He wills in the minds of His elect believers.  (Isaiah 55:11).
