Question 2
How doth it appear that there is a God?
The very light of nature in man, and the works of God, declare plainly that there is a God; (Rom. 1:19–20, Ps. 19:1–3, Acts 17:28) but his word and Spirit only do sufficiently and effectually reveal him unto men for their salvation. (1 Cor. 2:9–10, 2 Tim. 3:15–17, Isa. 59:21)
The Westminster Larger Catechism: With Scripture Proofs. (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 1996).
Interestingly the second question of the catechism immediately makes the distinction between general revelation and special revelation. General revelation is what God reveals in nature. But reason and nature can never lead to saving faith (Romans 1:18-21). Special revelation is what God reveals in His written word, the Holy Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21), and in Son, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1-2).
Peace,
Charlie
