The Reformed Theological Roots of the Southern Baptist Convention

Today one would have a hard time finding a Calvinist majority in the Southern Baptist Convention.  However, the founders of the Southern Baptist Convention were predominately Calvinists.  If the current state of Arminian apostasy in the SBC is any indication, compromise with Arminianism leads to further error, not the establishment of the truth.  Tom Ascol explains on the Iron Sharpens Iron radio program that the theological roots of the SBC were unquestionably Calvinist despite the hostility of modern SBC leaders against it.   Click here to hear the program:  The Calvinist Roots of the SBC.  This link opens an MP3 playable file.

Looks like 60% of Southern Baptists think that Calvinism is a heresy. While only 30% of SBC pastors openly admit their views are Arminian, the fact that 60% of Baptists think Calvinism is a problem shows that their views are actually Arminian leaning whether or not they will admit it.  My own view is that Arminianism is actually a Roman Catholic leaning heresy that is at its foundation a form of semi-pelagianism or pelagianism.  The Anabaptists ironically were semi-pelagians as well.

Ironically, the historical roots of the Southern Baptist Convention were at one time solidly Calvinist as the statement of doctrinal distinctives at Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky clearly shows.  (See:  The Abstract of Principles).
