Darryl G. Hart Weighs in on the John Frame Controversy

Frame conducted a "hit job" and "frame job" on Dr. Horton, who towers over Frame in terms of education, influence, radio, publications and exposure in national conferences. I had John for two years at Westminster. (Also, that good and godly Anglican, Dr. Philip Edcumbe Hughes...Charlie, you would have liked him. He and Bob Godfrey, Pres of WSC, but church history Prof at WTS, led the charge against the heresy of Shepherd's justification by faith and works. The meek Hughes was not to be crossed on that issue

This Frame-piece is a literary hit job.

Yes, but unfortunately I went to Asbury. If I had it to do over again I would have gone to Westminster or RTS. But in some ways it made me stronger to have to survive in a hostile environment. And believe you me, Asbury is hostile to Calvinism and conservative Evangelicalism. It pretends to be Evangelical but the truth is Asbury has few to no convictions anymore. They think Roman Catholics are great and the liberals are great, too. There is little to no critical analysis of liberal theology or anything else.

Asbury made you stronger, having fought the good fight.

I will never recommend RTS, Orlando. Or, WTS, Phillie.

As to Darryl Hart, he is at WTS along with Carl Trueman, two dependable commentators.

Darryl Hart is a well-researched and well-read man on the development of fundamentalism and evangelicalism. He is one of the most creditable and credible sources on American religion in the 20th century, every bit as scholarly as Dr. Mark Noll; in fact, he's bette than Noll, an ECT-signatory.

In his blog somewhere, DHG called Frame "Charles Erdman's Passive-Aggressive Step-Grandson." If you know the development of Machen, Princeton and Charles Erdman, you will eminently perceive the "dig" made on Frame.

That is, Frame is making peace with the wider culture of evangelicals (most of which is Arminian) as did the influential Presbyterian, Charles Erdman.

As a total aside, I am not pleased with what I am hearing about Australians.

2/3s of Australia is Anglo-Catholic. The Sydney Anglicans make up about 1/3 and they are a mixed bag. You have the modern church growth influence, the broad evangelical influence, and the majority of them are Amyraldians due to the influence of D. Broughton Knox who was trained at the liberal version of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford if I am not mistaken. One of Knox's professors was C.H.Dodd, whom Knox criticized openly later.

Anyway, to his credit, Peter Jensen himself is a 5 point Calvinist. The trouble is Amyralidanism leads to greater and greater compromise and we're beginning to see the results of that already.

Mark Thompson sees the conservative Anglo-Catholics as "persecuted brothers" rather than "co-belligerent heretics." I think being co-belligerent against homosexual immorality does not obligate me to accept Anglo-Catholics as "brothers" since they are in fact papists and pelagians.

When will truth again be seen as more important than unity???

Thanks for the update on Australia.

Did not know AC's had acquired dominance.

Glad to hear Jensen is a 5-pointer.

I don't like the language on offer from Sydney about "persecuted brothers," e.g. Anglo-Catholics.

The ACs are dominant in the other 2 dioceses. I think there are 2. I have to confirm that. Sydney is predominately protestant. There are a handful of ACs in Sydney. The vast majority are Protestants. They are a controversial and significant part of the Australian Anglican Church. I think they outnumber the other 2 dioceses as well.

But the trouble is they are selling out to the church growth movement and this is caused by the influence of Billy Graham early on and by their inherent Amyraldianism. Amyraldianism is a greater compromise than common grace.

I think the doctrine of common grace is an incipient form of Amyraldianism because eventually the doctrine of common grace leads to a 4.5 or 4.0 Calvinism or Amyraldianism which in turn leads to Arminianism.

If you don't believe me take a long look at Calvin Seminary and Calvin College where the Amyraldian view is now taking over. Take a look at Fuller where common grace is also leading to the Amyraldian view.

Thanks for info on Australia.

As to Amyraldianism, the expert is Dr. Roger Nicole, two earned doctorates, the latter from Harvard.

A French Reformed (5-point) Baptist. If he is still alive, last I heard he was in Orlando, FL.

A godly man. He would be a good data man on Amyraldianism.
