Question 15: A Short Catechism for Young Churchmen

Q. (15) What do we need in order to turn to God?

A. In order to turn to God, we need "the grace of God by Christ preventing us (i.e. going before us), that we may have a good will; and working with us, when we have that good will."-(Art. X; Jer. 31: 18, 19; 1 Cor. 15:10; Phil. 2:13.)

My comment:  This does not mean that God gives grace to all individuals without exception.  It means that God gives the grace to the elect prior to their having faith and that faith is itself a gift of God.  Without that "preventing" grace or grace given beforehand no one would believe.  That there are believing individuals is a miracle of God.  Without it everyone would be an unbeliever.  Ephesians 2:8-9 proves this as well.  -- Charlie
