Carl Trueman: “I am relatively comfortable describing myself as Evangelical in the UK and Australia, where it speaks of a basically orthodox Protestant Christianity with an evangelistic mindset. … In the USA, however, I myself shy away from the term. There it tends to carry connotations of very conservative politics and activism in the so-called ‘culture wars’.
Funny
but I refuse to call myself an Evangelical for very different reasons.
Here in the US and in the UK and even in Australia the Evangelical
movement is mostly heterodox so that everyone and their brother claims
to be an orthodox Christian, including the Anglo-Papists and the
Arminians. The truth is the only genuinely orthodox Christianity is
classical Calvinism and perhaps the original Reformed Anglicans who were
also Calvinists during the time of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer.
Furthermore,
Trueman's remarks reveal that his political allegiances are with those
who include abortion and homosexuality in their political platform. So
Trueman's hypocrisy shines through. Like all liberals he pretends to be
neutral but all the while takes the opposing side in the culture war.
What? Do we theological and political conservatives look stupid or
something?
