Obviously Sam Harris is not a Christian. But what is interesting here is that even materialistic philosophers acknowledge that there is no free will. Of course their view of determinism is strictly environmental, cultural, sociological, and psychological. The Calvinist acknowledges all these influences but attributes them all to the sovereignty of God. We do not choose our parents, our extended family, our time and place of birth in history, and a host of other aspects relative to ourselves--including our physiology and biological gender. These are all predetermined by God. Perversions of these things the Calvinist attributes to the doctrine of the total corruption of the human nature by the sinful nature and original sin.
