“I’m researching Killing Jesus, do you know why Jesus was killed, by the Romans? … You don’t know and you shouldn’t know because it was about taxes, taxes!” – Bill O’Reilly, The O’Reilly Factor, March 2013 (see here: Jesus killed over taxes)
Talk about confusing politics with the Gospel? Bill O'Reilly has a new theory. He thinks Jesus was crucified by Roman socialists and Jewish Pharisees who wanted to overtax people. I already knew Billy was a papist and an heretic. But now he's crossed another line into a liberalism that deifies capitalism at the expense of the Gospel itself.
The real reason for the crucifixion of Jesus was for our sins:
44. How doth Christ execute the office of a priest? Answer: Christ executeth the office of a priest, in his once offering himself a sacrifice without spot to God,1 to be a reconciliation for the sins of his people;2 and in making continual intercession for them.3

I might agree with smaller government and less taxes, but what does that have to do with the substitutionary atonement of Christ? Absolutely nothing! I believe the Bible teaches a view of economics and politics that favors small government, less taxes, and less government interference in private matters such as religion. Socialism and secularism threatens religious freedom. Unfortunately, unbridled conservative secularism like that being marketed by Bill O'Reilly is no less a threat to democracy than the liberal politics of the left. Worse, O'Reilly is claiming to have divine illumination in what can only be called an outright denial of the authority of Scripture and God's purpose for the atonement. (Acts 2:23; 4:27-28).
