Holman Christian Standard Bible: Free Online Study Bible

The Holman Christian Standard Bible has a Study Bible edition available. The publishers have made this edition available for free online access. I have read this version from time to time and have found that it is actually better than the English Standard Version in some places in the text and worse in others. As I understand it, the Holman CSB is published by the Southern Baptist Convention and Lifeway Christian Resources so the translation will reflect the presuppositions of Baptists generally.

Although this claims to be a literal translation, like the ESV there are interpretative and dynamic equivalency translations in particular places in the text like Revelation 13:8. Only the KJV and the NKJV get Revelation 13:8 right as it stands in the text. Greek word order or syntax generally reads like English and to change the word order based on a presupposed theological position is inexcusable in my opinion. There are places where Greek word order does not determine meaning but Revelation 13:8 is not one of them.

In general literal translations are better.  However, even the one of the most literal translations, the New American Standard Bible, gets Revelation 13:8 wrong.  That's true even in the 1995 updated edition of the NASB.

See my article on this at: Why There Is No Perfect Translation of the Bible.

Charlie,
Does it have a good concordance with it or do you know of on online concordance? My husband's computer, where I used his great concordance, died and I need a good concordance that I could put on the two computers I use.

Hi, Carol...

This version is online only. You would need to buy a Bible program of some kind to have it resident on your computer. But that's not necessary since there are several concordances available online. And Holman's online version of the CSB Study Bible does have links to key words in the Strong's numbering system. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to navigate around in the windows. Just look on the right sidebar and look at the "Notes". Then click on "Read" and that will open up the window to the study notes with Strong's numbering, notes on the verse, etc.

A better concordance is available at:

Biblos.Com

Another good online study Bible is the NET Bible. It has excellent footnotes on many issues, although the textual criticism notes may not make sense to you if you have no experience with textual criticism. You can see the NET STudy Bible here: NET Study Bible.

I'm sorry to hear that your husband has died, Miss Carol. May God grant you His peace and comfort through your time of mourning.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Charlie

Thanks for the tip on concordances.

My husband's COMPUTER died, OR CRASHED, Charlie. He is alive and still in stage one of Alzheimer's. With the LORD's help I am the best caregiver I can be.

Oh, no. I'm sorry. How could I misread that? I'm sure that being a caregiver has challenges. My prayers are still with you.

Anyway, I hope you find the links useful.

In Christ,

Charlie
